Product questions
The product questions that quietly kill your conversion rate
A shopper who cannot get an answer does not email you — they close the tab. These are the questions that end sessions, and where each one should be answered.
The pattern behind most drop-offs
Product pages are written to persuade, and questions are treated as support. But a question asked at the moment of decision is a sales conversation. If it takes an email and a day to answer, the sale is already gone.
The five question types that stop a purchase
1. Fit and sizing
"I'm between sizes" — answer with the actual garment measurements and what you recommend, not a generic chart.
2. Compatibility
"Will this work with X?" — the most expensive unanswered question in electronics, parts and accessories. Answer with named models.
3. Delivery reality
"Will it reach me by Friday, at my pincode?" — a shipping page with zones does not answer this. State cut-off times and typical days.
4. Returns risk
"What if it doesn't suit me?" — every hedge in your returns copy reads as a trap. Say the process in one sentence.
5. Stock and restock
"When is this back?" — an honest "we don't know yet, we'll email you" outperforms silence.
Where each answer belongs
- Answers to questions asked by most buyers belong in the product description or specs — not in an FAQ tab.
- Answers that vary by product belong on the product page, near the buy button.
- Answers that need your judgement belong in a question box on the product page, answered publicly so the next shopper benefits.
- Only account- and order-specific questions belong in a support inbox.
Every question you answer twice is a content task, not a support task. Move it up the page.
A two-week exercise worth doing
- Collect every pre-purchase question from email, WhatsApp and DMs for two weeks.
- Tag each one with the five types above.
- Take the top three by volume and rewrite the relevant product page sections to answer them outright.
- Add a question box to those products so the remaining questions are captured on-page instead of in a DM.
- Re-check the same tags a month later; the mix tells you what to fix next.
What good looks like
You know it is working when the product page answers the question before it is asked, and the questions you do receive are new ones. That is the useful outcome: not zero questions, but zero repeated questions.
